Quirigua







During our May Zone Conference, we stopped to visit Quirigua which one of the 1st archeological sites discovered in the Americas in 1840. Joseph Smith suggested (in Times and Seasons, Oct 1, 1841) that Quirigua was a possible candidate for the City of Zarahemla or some other Book of Mormon City. Quirigua is one of these famous Classic Maya cities that post dates Book of Mormon times, however, recent excavations in the deep alluvial flood deposits have uncovered extensive ruins that do date back into Book of Mormon times.
